Bridges Library System consists of the 24 libraries in Waukesha and Jefferson Counties. In 2014, we launched a traditional 1000 Books before Kindergarten program for our member libraries. We were then called the Waukesha County Federated Library System. The 1000 Books before Kindergarten program is traditionally offered as a pencil and paper model where parents/caregivers record which books they’ve read to their children. Many of our member libraries offer this program.
In spring 2015, our library system launched the 1000 Books before Kindergarten app. The app is similar to the traditional model of 1000 books. The goal is to read 1000 books to your child before they enter kindergarten. Research shows that by reading 1000 books before entering kindergarten prepares your child to enter school ready to learn.
In early 2016, our library system reached out to the other library systems in the state of Wisconsin to ask if they would like to partner with us on version 2.0 of the app. We received an overwhelmingly positive response. The library systems partnering with us include: Arrowhead Library System, Indianhead Federated Library System, Lakeshores Library System, Milwaukee County Federated Library System, Nicolet Federated Library System, South Central Library System, Winnefox Library System, and Wisconsin Valley Library Service. Version 2.0 of the 1000 Books before Kindergarten app was released in September 2016. Library communities around Wisconsin have begun promoting and using the app just like we do here in SE Wisconsin.
